Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Barnala, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized Kisan Mela 2026 on the theme “Crop Residue Management Technologies” at KVK Barnala in guidance of Dr. P.S. Tanwar, Associate Director, Krishi Vigyan Kenrda, Barnala. A large number of farmers, farm women and rural youth participated in the programme and from different village of District Barnala interacted with University scientists and officials from various state departments.
Dr. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, attended as the Special Guest. The mela was inaugurated by Dr. J.P.S. Gill Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Dr. P. S. Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK Barnala, welcomed the dignitaries and participants and highlighted the role of KVK in transferring scientific agricultural and livestock technologies to the farming community. He emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable crop residue management practices instead of burning paddy straw.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal highlighted the extension activities of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana and encouraged farmers to remain connected with the University and KVKs for scientific guidance, skill development and adoption of improved technologies.
In his address, Dr. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill emphasized the importance of integrated farming, scientific livestock management and efficient utilization of farm resources for sustainable agricultural development. He encouraged farmers and rural youth to adopt improved technologies and strengthen agriculture and allied enterprises through scientific interventions.
A series of technical lectures was organized during the mela. Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), FASC Barnala, PAU, discussed Rabi season crops and crop residue management technologies. Er. Anand Gautam, Assistant Professor (Farm Machinery), PAU, Ludhiana explained the use of farm machinery for in-situ and ex-situ crop residue management. Dr. Subash Chandra, Assistant Professor (Livestock), College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, delivered a lecture on scientific goat farming and management practices. Dr Jasleen, Veterinary Medicine, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana discussed the prevention and management of common diseases of dairy animals.
Dr. Prabhjeet Singh, Associate Director, KVK Booh, discussed fisheries and integrated farming systems for enhancing farm income. Dr. Karamjit Singh, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, shared information on departmental schemes and livestock development programmes. Dr. Sukhpal Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, discussed agricultural schemes and crop residue management initiatives. Dr. Suryendra Singh, Deputy Director, Dairy Development, highlighted dairy development schemes and opportunities for farmers, while Er. Suryansh Mittal, Soil Conservation Officer, discussed soil and water conservation and efficient management of agricultural resources.
The Chief Guest and other dignitaries also visited the exhibitions, stalls and displays of crop residue management machinery, where different technologies, farm inputs and advisory services were showcased for the benefit of farmers.
One of the major highlights of Kisan Mela 2026 was the recognition of progressive members of the farming community. A total of 47 farmers, farm women and rural youth were honoured with Appreciation Awards for their achievements, adoption of improved technologies and contribution towards agriculture, livestock and allied enterprises. The awards were presented by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor and other dignitaries.
An interactive farmer-scientist discussion session was also organized, during which farmers raised queries related to crop production, crop residue management, livestock, fisheries, dairy farming, goat farming, farm machinery and other agricultural enterprises. Scientists and departmental experts provided technical guidance and practical solutions to their problems.
